RV Thuwal discovered a new brine in the southern sector of the Red Sea back in 2019. This led to a more intensive mapping project with the RV Thuwal multibeam system, backed up by deep water sampling and ROV inspections. This project led to the Nature publication: Discovery of Afifi, the shallowest and southernmost brine pool reported in the Red Sea.
