As part of the Memorandum of Understanding with Fugro a limited number of days per year can be allocated for KAUST offshore research. The first of these surveys took place at the of 2019 and led to the discovery of a deep sea volcano (which may or may not be active, further research needed!). For this mission CMR Oceanographic specialist Frank Mallon was the sole KAUST representative on board and he led the project.
